Small businesses often focus on a very specific market niche. It helps them stand out in the crowded streetscape of shops. This case study compares the retail operations of two shops run by two brothers in two very different locations using a common product base – textiles imported from Guatemala. Do things that sell well in one location sell in another? What is the marketing mix? An expert in small business management assesses the marketing approach of the company and discusses more effective marketing strategies.

Materials for Design: Felt
Felt is currently experiencing renewed interest, as consumers grow weary of factory-made products. This program provides an understanding of the traditional uses of felt and how designers are now using felt in contemporary work. We meet a maker of felt products, who discusses why they use felt. Wool properties are also examined and the felting process is demonstrated. We also show how the properties of felt influence – yet also limit – the design of the finished product. In addition to the beautifully filmed program, the DVD features extra footage of the artist showing and describing 3 of her felt creations. This program is a fascinating insight into this often overlooked fabric.

Materials for Design: Resin Jewelry
In this program we look at resin – a plastic that can be put to the most creative and artistic of uses. We provide a brief overview of the history of plastics: natural plastics, the first man-made plastic, the plastic ‘revolution’ of the 1960s and recycling and waste issues. Then we look at two designers: Rebekah Webster and Viliama Grakalic who work with resin. They showcase their work, discuss the properties of resin and why they like working with it. We also consider health and safety issues when working with resin and discuss processes, materials and equipment.

Similarity, Ratio and Proportion
This program presents the ideas of similarity, ratio and proportion in a refreshing and informal style. Examples are drawn from everyday life using familiar objects with on-screen graphics producing clear well defined diagrams. Thorough explanations are provided with worked examples and student practice is also included. Methods to obtain indirect measurements are simplified and elegantly demonstrated, including surveying methods to find the width of a river and a mirror to find the height of a tall object. Both of these methods are suitable for student activities and use readily obtainable equipment.

Coordinate Geometry
The program explores the first quadrant of the Cartesian plane in the context of a city street grid, then looks at using coordinates, graphing relationships and how slope is measured.
-
Geometric Transformations
The program uses everyday situations and examples to explain the major types of geometric transformations: translations, rotations, reflections and dilations

Naming and Measuring Angles
This program provides students with a lively introduction to key concepts involved with angles, such as how we define and write information about an angle, mathematical notation for rays, line segments and lines, and how to use a protractor. Obtuse and acute angles are illustrated, the relationships between the angles formed by a transversal crossing parallel lines are investigated and congruent triangles are introduced, all using examples from real life, supplemented by clear graphic overlays and simple animations.

Geometric Constructions
The program demonstrates the following constructions in the context of a student creating a mobile to hang above a baby’s cot: Bisecting an angle; Perpendicular bisector of a line; Constructing a triangle using three known side length; Determine the center of gravity by constructing medians; Determine the inscribed circle of a triangle by constructing the angle bisectors; Determine the circumcircle of a triangle by constructing the perpendicular bisectors.
