  • Radioisotopes at work

Radioisotopes have an important role in society today. The ability of radiation to pass through matter allows radioisotopes to be applied in many different ways. This video examines the use of radioisotopes in medicine (diagnosis, radiotherapy) and industry (e.g. materials testing). Radioisotope manufacture is described and radiation safety is discussed in different contexts.

  • Play Building

For many students learning how to work co-operatively with their peers is a way of developing self confidence in themselves and their own ideas. Through Drama, students experience a sense of security and trust that allows them to develop the confidence to take risks and express themselves in performance. The video is in three parts; warm ups; germination and group formation; and performance and evaluation.

  • Population Management

3 stories of Scientists at work: FOX “Cunning Little Pill” – How Scientists are using the fox immune system to reject sperm; KANGAROO “To Kill or Cultivate the Aussie Roo” – How the populations are monitored and how the kangaroo meat industry works. The issue of whether kangaroos should be culled; THYLOCENE “Cloning the Tasmanian Tiger” – Scientists are trying to use DNA from a preserved specimen to bring the thylocene back from extinction.

    Applications pratiques.

  • Polarization of Light

Topics include generation of photons of light; photons polarized/polarized at right angles; conductors reflect and insulators transmit; velocity and polarization in a crystal; Polaroid film, how it works; polarization by partial reflection; polarization of sky, haze, milk in water; between crossed polaroids, sugar, cellophane, tooth, plastic under stress, LCD, puzzles.

  • The Pond

Ponds offer a unique opportunity for scientific study. If you think of any key biological concept there’s a good chance you’ll find it illustrated in, or around a pond. They are fine examples of the biosphere in action. “The Pond” examines: community ecology, the importance of biological communities and how scientists work to understand complex scientific concepts by breaking things down into communities; food chains and food webs, including the complexities and problems of examining a food web; key biological process including photosynthesis, the oxygen/carbon cycle and energy transfer along a food chain; the importance of the detritus pathway; adaptations of and interactions between living organisms.

  • Population, Settlement & Change

This video examines population growth, urbanization and Western influence in the Solomon Islands – which is changing from a subsistence rural economy into an increasingly monetized urban society. An excellent teaching aid for Geography, suitable for years 9-11.

  • Pork Production

What does it take to produce a continuous supply of safe, high quality pork products for the retail and export market? We take a look behind the scenes at the activities and processes used, from the farm to the processing plant. Topics covered include: the farm – housing, feeding, health; the abattoir – preparation of the carcass for processing; the boning room – processing methods, occupational health and safety, quality assurance (hygiene, HACCP), packaging. Suitable for students studying Food Technology 7-12 and Hospitality 11-12.

  • Particle Model & Kinetic Theory

Topics include stacking – crystals, angles and ionic radii; temperature – kinetic energy; solution; precipitation – particles stack as crystals; particles move fast – Brownian movement; gas has mass, KE, momentum; gas has pressure, temperature, volume; gas laws – P,V, and T in combinations.
