Subjects: Design

  • Hand Tools for Woodworking

For centuries humans have used their hands to build things and shape their environment, from creating a simple wheel to constructing giant sky scrapers. As our skills and the complexity of our tasks develop so do the tools we use. But no matter how big the job or how complex the task, many of the basic hand tools we use have remained the same. This program introduces us to a range of basic hand tools covering their uses, tips, and possible pitfalls. A full demonstration of how to safely and effectively use a range of saws, planes, and chisels is provided.

  • Redesigning a Product

The aim of this program is to introduce methods used by designers when redesigning a product; it demonstrates how designers define a need or problem and the techniques and strategies used to solve those problems. The program also describes the principles of Intellectual Property and the importance of acknowledging the Intellectual Property of others. Students should develop an understanding of the role of the designer and the reasons why and how products are redesigned. Students should also develop an appreciation of the use of a structured approach towards the design process through analyzing the examples of the design practice used by a designer.

  • Ergonomics in the Real World

Just about everything you see, touch, smell, taste and hear is designed for humans by humans. Ergonomics seeks to understand and improve human interactions with products, equipment, environments and systems. This program investigates how and why ergonomic design is so important, from the perspectives of safety, comfort, performance, aesthetics and ease of use. The program focuses on two case studies – the Rota Sole shoe and the ‘Last Beach House’ – and explores the various aspects of ergonomics and its relationship with design technology in reference to the environment, sport and everyday products.

  • Developing a Design Brief

Students are introduced to the skills used in design processes, design theory and the work of designers. They will see how two designers research, experiment, and communicate creative design ideas and solutions. They will gain an understanding of the responsible selection and safe use of materials, tools and techniques. Students are introduced to the impact of innovation and emerging technologies on the individual, society and the environment, they will learn the importance of evaluating their own and others’ design activities.

  • Design: A Team Approach

In this program students apply techniques and processes to design, manufacture and assemble a product as a team, and then apply evaluation principles to assess the overall exercise. They examine how design teams and individual designers evaluate their use of materials, techniques and processes in transforming design options into a product range or team-designed product. Design: A Team Approach seeks to show how a team works towards a common goal beginning with a client interview through to the design stage, the planning and communicating of ideas, through to the actual production. The program concludes by demonstrating how evaluation can be a useful tool to monitor a team’s progress towards their common goal.
