This concluding part of “Building a House” focuses on the construction and finishing of the interior of a wood-frame house. Students will see the installation of plumbing and drainage pipe throughout the house. Hot water radiant floor heating is installed, then the electricians string cable and install fixtures. Glass fibre insulation comes next, then drywalling and paint. A variety of floors are installed: marble tile, pre-finished hardwood, and carpeting. One segment is devoted to final carpentry and includes installation of kitchen cabinets and the hanging of doors. The program ends with the family moving in. Appropriate for Technology/Carpentry courses and offers a view of the great variety of skilled tradesmen involved.
Grade levels: Senior High (10-12)

Chemistry of Carbon
Carbon is the basis of all organic materials. Topics include charcoal, hydrocarbons, coal, limestone, magnesium burining in CO2, graphite, diamonds, burning a diamond, testing for CO2, fullernes bucky balls and tubes.

Building a House – Part 1: The Exterior
This video is the first of two parts that follows the construction of an up-scale, wood-frame house from the empty lot to the final coat of paint. Part One concentrates on the exterior of the home and documents the stages of construction: foundation, framing, drainage, roofing, cladding, and much more. Professional tradesman are involved at every phase of the building process, including excavation of the hole, preparation of the foundation forms for concrete, framing the walls, placement of roof trusses, and final roofing. This video is appropriate for all Technology/Carpentry courses and also gives students a first-hand look at the variety of occupations involved in the construction of a house.

Careers in Chemistry and Physics
The careers addressed include: meteorology, food technology, physiotherapy, geology engineering, mechanical, electrical, chemical environmental, civil, mining, and coastal trades.
-

Bicycle Design and Manufacture
The designer shows us how he modifies the designs each year for a changing market. Topics include the processes in manufacture, the market survey, and the launch to the dealers.
-

Chemistry of Cooking
Chef and RMIT lecturer Louis Ferguson illustrates the following physical and chemical changes in cooking as he whips up an egg sponge; topics discussed include aeration, denaturation, coagulation, gelatinisation, browning reactions, emulsification, crystallization.
-

Biophysical Environment
Interactions between the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere at three scales including global latitude and vegetation patterns, regional watershed, and local mangroves.
-
Carbon Cycles and Cycles
Our animated atoms have been prevailed upon to make another appearance. At the “Club Chlorophyll”, carbon atoms set off on their various carbon cycles. Topics examined include glucose, starch, cellulose, coal, oil, limestone, and photosynthesis. At the end students should be able to write their own carbon cycle stories.
-
Biosphere Cycles – Senior
This video examines the workings of the Earth’s biosphere. It discusses how the one way flow of energy from the sun underpins the continual recycling of molecules between living & non-living states. Featured in the video are key nutrient cycles including carbon/oxygen, nitrogen and phosphorous, the research of Jean-Baptiste van Helmont, discussion on how human practices are impacting on nutrient cycles, an examination of how living things decompose. Time-lapse sequences of decomposing organic matter, and a case study of the workings of a major coffee farm and how it’s proprietors attempt to manage production thanks to their improved understanding of cycles in the biosphere.
-
Cell Division
This video unravels the mystery of cell division using clear and simple animations, together with exceptional micro photographic images of cell division occurring in animal and plant cells. Topics explored include mitosis, meiosis, cytokinesis, morphogenesis, and embryogenesis.
