  • Landing on a Comet: The Rosetta Mission

Landing on a Comet: The Rosetta Mission

This program is the pinnacle of a multi-decade quest. It is the journey of two tethered beings in the deepest reaches of space. It is the story of Rosetta and Philae – a spacecraft and her lander, both on a daring and historic journey to visit and land on a comet, sending back to Earth, clues to life’s beginnings.

  • NOVA: Rise of the Drones

NOVA reveals the amazing technologies that make drones so powerful. From cameras that can capture every detail of an entire city at a glance, to swarming robots that can make decisions on their own, to giant air frames that can stay aloft for days on end, drones are changing our relationship to war, surveillance and each other. Discover the cutting-edge technologies that are propelling us toward a new chapter in aviation history.

  • NOVA: Secrets of Stonehenge

Every year, a million visitors are drawn to the Salisbury Plain, in southern England, to gaze upon a mysterious circle of stones. Who built Stonehenge? What was its purpose? A new generation of researchers is tackling these questions, finding important clues in the landscape surrounding Stonehenge -one of the densest concentrations of prehistoric structures in the world. The story of Stonehenge is being rewritten.

  • Safe Manual Handling: Three Steps To a Safer Workplace

In the past safe manual handling training was all about how to lift things correctly. However current practice is to minimize the risk of manual handling injury through a three step process: 1. Identify hazardous manual handling tasks; 2. Assess risks involved in hazardous tasks; 3. Risk control – measures to reduce or eliminate risks. With the aid of an ergonomist and a physiotherapist, this program demonstrates how to make a workplace safer using some basic principles and procedures.

  • Safety in Technology Workshops: Working with Wood, Metal and Plastic

Because technology workshops can be very dangerous places, students need to be comprehensively educated about safety. Based on extensive research with teachers and DOE advisors, this program concentrates on those areas in which students can make a significant contribution to their own safety, such as the use of personal protective equipment. Many potential hazards are discussed, from keeping the floor free of obstacles to the dangers of excessive noise, electrical tools and airborne dust.

  • Manufacturing and the Product Cycle: A Case Study of Moran Furniture

All products go through a development process from conception to final evaluation. In this program, Moran Furniture explain the stages in their product cycle – the process that creates their award-winning sofas. The product cycle is examined from the initial concept through product design, production and distribution, marketing and sales. We also consider the value of further evaluation and modification of the products. Students will gain an understanding that research and development is an ongoing issue and continues right through the product cycle.

  • Joining Metals

This program is an excellent introduction to the methods of joining metals. It discusses the advantages of welding over non-welding methods and details both fusion and non-fusion methods. Students will gain insight into the required equipment and operating procedures, preparation of materials for welding and specific safety considerations. Non-fusion methods such as Soldering, Brazing, Bronze Welding and Spot Welding are outlined. Fusion methods such as Shield Metallic Arc Welding, MIG, TIG and Oxy Acetylene are demonstrated. Specific joints, such as Butt Joints and Filet Joints are explained.

  • Fasteners for Cabinet Making

This program is an excellent introduction to the use of the various fasteners to join timber and manufactured boards in the construction of cabinets and furniture. The features and properties for screws, nails and pins, assembly fittings and biscuit joinery are explained. Trade teachers provide demonstrations and advice on when and how to use a particular fastener. This is an invaluable resource for all beginners in the trade.

  • Managing Databases

This program takes viewers through the basics of setting up and maintaining a database, covering areas such as setting up relationships, creating a data capture form, creating queries, setting up reports and creating and running macros.

  • Building Bridges – The Physics of Construction

The nuts & bolts of building bridges. What factors to consider when you build a bridge and what’s the Physics behind them? Introducing the concepts of Stress, Strain and Young’s Modulus to describe the structural properties of building materials. This program examines the variety of bridge designs that these materials can be put to: how they work and why. It examines a bridge plan and uses concepts of Torque and Static forces to see if it stands the test of its load. Finally it challenges students to design and test their own bridges from simple materials.
