Materials for Design: Felt
Felt is currently experiencing renewed interest, as consumers grow weary of factory-made products. This program provides an understanding of the traditional uses of felt and how designers are now using felt in contemporary work. We meet a maker of felt products, who discusses why they use felt. Wool properties are also examined and the felting process is demonstrated. We also show how the properties of felt influence – yet also limit – the design of the finished product. In addition to the beautifully filmed program, the DVD features extra footage of the artist showing and describing 3 of her felt creations. This program is a fascinating insight into this often overlooked fabric.

Materials for Design: Resin Jewelry
In this program we look at resin – a plastic that can be put to the most creative and artistic of uses. We provide a brief overview of the history of plastics: natural plastics, the first man-made plastic, the plastic ‘revolution’ of the 1960s and recycling and waste issues. Then we look at two designers: Rebekah Webster and Viliama Grakalic who work with resin. They showcase their work, discuss the properties of resin and why they like working with it. We also consider health and safety issues when working with resin and discuss processes, materials and equipment.

Designing a Chair: Sitting Pretty
This program looks at chair design from two slightly different perspectives. One is presented by Julian Pratt, Co-ordinator Furniture Programs, RMIT University. His is a fairly standard ‘by-the-book’ kind of approach. The other practitioners take a more lateral, less academic approach to the question of design. Given their international reputation, their opinions provide a neat counterpoint to Julian Pratt.

The Design Process – From Concept to Customer
The content of this program is practically based, taking the viewer, step by step through the production of a food product using the components of the design process. The program simultaneously looks at using the design process in a commercial and domestic setting. By using the commercial and domestic settings side by side, strong links can be developed to the real life context of the design process used in a classroom setting. The program is based on a number of interviews with industry experts who share and display their skills and knowledge on various areas of the design process. Visual demonstrations of the processes give an in depth and engaging insight into the development of a food product from start to finish within a large commercial company, Heinz.
