The Standard Deviants find out why molecules choose one carbocation over the other. Do they take the path of least resistance, or the road less traveled? The Standard Deviants break the process down, step-by-step. Next up, hydration reactions. Hydration reactions produce a neutral alcohol. How do they do it? You’ll find out!
Subjects: Chemistry
-
Electrophilic Reactions I
The Standard Deviants cover a few of your favorite electrophilic addition reactions. Today’s guest reactions are hydration and halogen addition.
-
Halohydrin Formation Reactions
First, the Standard Deviants take you through a halohydrin formation reaction. Halo-what’s-in? Don’t worry, the Standard Deviants explain everything.
-
Organic Chemistry Companion CD-ROM
This companion CD-ROM is packed with robust supplementary materials: Lesson plans, viewing guides, teacher reference guides, students activities, worksheets and tests.
-
Playing Safe in the Lab
Practical work in the school science lab can be great fun – but like most work environments, there can also be many dangers for students who don’t know the basic safety rules. In this program we join a typical group of Grade 7 students to learn all about working safely in the school science laboratory, covering essential topics such as science room behavior, handling chemicals, coping with chemical splashes, handling glassware, dealing with broken glassware, lighting Bunsen burners, dealing with burns, scalds and cuts, using electrical equipment and what to do in an emergency.
-
Chemical Analysis One
Chemical Analysis One uses sophisticated computer animation to give senior chemistry students a unique insight into the theory and operation of the three most commonly used tools in analytical chemistry: Atomic Absorption Spectrometry; Gas Chromatography; High Pressure Liquid Chromatography. The program outlines the need for quick, efficient, cost-effective and reliable techniques for testing a variety of chemical samples.
-
Chemical Analysis Two
This program outlines the need for quick cost-effective and reliable testing of samples in industry, health, manufacturing and environmental applications. The program considers the use of the “Bomb” calorimeter, and students are shown how the Mass Spectrometer is used in conjunction with the Gas Chromatograph to identify substances such as carcinogenic compounds in soil.
-
Corrosion Chemistry
This program is designed to help students understand the chemistry in corrosion. The enigmatic presenter takes the viewer on an informative journey examining such issues as what causes corrosion, necessary conditions for corrosion to occur, which metals corrode, oxidization, electricity and redox and corrosion minimization. Enhanced by animated graphics and laboratory experiments, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of this chemical process.
-
The Periodic Table
This lab pack, for classroom use, draws on a database of more than 5000 math questions. The pace and level of difficulty change according to each student’s progress.
-
Biofuels – Alternative Energy Supply
This program investigates the mode of production of a range of biofuels, from biogas, ethanol and butanol to vegetable oils and biodiesel. Students will gain a thorough understanding of the topic as we look at their uses as well as the advantages and disadvantages of the various fuels.
