  • The Enthalpy of Phase Changes

Determines the molar enthalpy of a phase change by assuming that kinetic and potential energy changes of a substance undergoing a temperature and phase change are equal to kinetic energy of the calorimeter.

  • The Hardy-Weinberg Principle

Presents the Hardy-Weinberg principle and its underlying concepts of population equilibrium. Uses animated graphics, Punnett squares and simulations to determine the frequency of alleles within a population.

  • Molar Enthalpies and Formation Reactions

Explains enthalpy changes in terms of rearrangement of chemical bonds and examines how to graphically determine enthalpy change for a reaction using known enthalpy changes for other reactions.

  • Gene Frequencies, Natural Selection and Speciation

Analyses how factors such as genetics drift, gene flow, mutation and random mating lead to changes in the gene pool. Talks with a palaeontologist about how natural selection and speciation might have occurred. Takes a journey to the Burgess Shale.

  • Hess’s Law and Enthalpy Communication

Shows how enthalpy changes can be communicated: as a term in an equation; as a delta H or molar delta H notation; and as a potential energy diagram. Demonstrates Hess’s Law using calorimetry, potential energy diagrams and molar enthalpies of formation.

  • Interactions and Relationships Among Organisms

Demonstrates the effect of intraspecific and interspecific competition on populations. Uses simulations and field trips to examine the relationship between predators and prey, and explore the various symbiotic relationships among organisms.

  • The Molar Enthalpy of a Neutralization Reaction

Determines the molar enthalpy of neutralization of sodium hydroxide using calorimetry. The experimental value is then compared to the actual value that was determined using Hess’s Law.

  • Succession and Climax Communities

Examines successional events and their causes in various communities and ecosystems. Analyses data on population and community change and examines the impact of human activity on various ecosystems. Presents some new ideas on the concept of succession.

  • Patterns of Population Growth and Management

Explores patterns of population growth and population management strategies. Illustrates the J-shaped growth curve of r-selected populations and the S-shaped growth curve for K-selected populations. Discusses biodiversity and sustainable development.

  • Alternate Patterns of Inheritance

Reveals how knowledge of Mendelian genetics, blood groups, and pedigrees can be used to solve a paternity case. Examines other patterns of human inheritance involving skin colour, eye colour and height.
