This 15-minute video familiarizes viewers with the Math Factor series by presenting examples from programs and demonstrating how to use the video and print components.
Grade levels: Senior High (10-12)
-
Solving Complex First- and Second-Degree Equations and Relationships
Trigonometric equations are solved using identities, systems of equations, and graphing technology. The cyclical nature of tides is explored.
-
Introduction to Polynomial Functions and Their Graphs
Water fountains and speeding cars are used to introduce polynomial functions, the basic terminology, the classification and properties of polynomial functions (domain, range, x- and y- intercepts), as well as rudimentary graphing techniques.
-
Trigonometric and Circular Functions Review
A review of trigonometric and circular functions. Topics receiving special attention include radian measure, transformation of trigonometric functions, solving trigonometric equations, and proving identities.
-
Acid-Base Titrations and Concentration Calculations
Hydrochloric acid is standardized using a sodium carbonate solution of known concentrate. The HCI titrant is used to titrate the ammonia. Data is collected and calculations completed to determine the concentration of the ammonia.
-
Acid-Base Technology and Society
Examines and evaluates uses of acids and bases in the food and pharmaceutical industries. Shows how acids, produced directly or indirectly, can lead to environmental problems such as acid rain.
-
Buffers and Buffer Systems
Buffers, and how they work, are explained in terms of the Brønsted-Lowry Theory and Le Châtelier’s Principle. Students explore the importance of buffers in biological systems and buffering action is illustrated using chemical reactions and pH curves.
-
Student Workbooks
Student workbooks are available for each program in the Math Factor series that help students practice their skills and improve comprehension and accuracy.
-
