Wound management is one of the cornerstones of good nursing care. Effective care of wounds extends far beyond the application of the wound dressing. Nurses and nursing assistants may be required to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care of wounds and in order to fulfill these roles, it is critical to have an understanding of the several basic procedures involved. In this program we examine skin anatomy, the classification of wounds, procedures, dressings, and documentation. Knowledge in each of these areas will allow nurses and nursing assistants to make well informed decisions about wound care and ultimately play an active part in promoting the healing process.

Learning With Wikis and Blogs
Wikis and blogs are becoming increasingly available on the Internet for anyone to read or create their own. They are also increasingly being used as teaching tools in the classroom. In this program, we discuss what wikis and blogs are and the differences between them. Students and teachers alike will see how these tools can be used in education, through various examples of use in the classroom. Viewers also meet the CEO and founder of edublogs.com, John Farmer, who demonstrates how easy it is to create your very own wikis and blogs. This is a fascinating look at how incorporating these online tools into teaching and learning can enhance and encourage participation in any classroom.

Understanding Electrolysis
Electrolysis has important applications in everyday life – from the batteries in our portable devices to the production of common metals such as aluminum. Featuring lab demonstrations, engaging graphics and clear explanations, this program looks at the chemistry of electrolysis. Two types of electrochemical cells are introduced – galvanic cells and electrolytic cells – and compared. The program discusses the industrial applications of electrochemistry, including brine electrolysis, aluminum production, electroplating and anodizing. Viewers are also introduced to the many applications of rechargeable batteries, such as lead-acid, Ni-MH and Li-ion batteries before concluding with an introduction to Faraday’s First Law of Electrolysis and stoichiometric calculations.

All About Chemical Bonding – Ionic
Who would have thought that two dangerous elements, such as sodium and chlorine, when bonded together, could create a new and harmless compound known as table salt? In this program we take a fascinating look at ionic bonding. Viewers will discover how and why bonding occurs, the Gilbert Lewis theory, the importance of the valence shell, the periodic table and its elements, and the common properties of ionic compounds. Viewers are also introduced to important terms of ionic bonding including electronegativety, Pauling scale, and ionization energy. With the assistance of animated graphics, ionic bonding is brought to life.
-
All About Chemical Bonding – Covalent
In this program we look at covalent bonding. A short summary as to why bonding occurs is presented before viewers witness how electrons are shared in covalent compounds. We discuss how the geometry of molecules is predicted by the Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) theory, the two types of weak forces of attraction between molecules, dipole interactions and dispersion forces, and covalent network solids which are formed from carbon atoms. Examples of network solids are addressed including diamond, graphite and fullerenes. With the assistance of animated graphics, this program provides viewers with a wonderful introduction to chemical bonding.
-
All About Chemical Bonding – Metallic
Before delving into metallic bonding, viewers are provided with an overview of why bonding occurs, learn about Gilbert Lewis’s Octet rule and why the elements in the periodic table are categorized. We discuss the importance of the ‘sea’ of electrons and how this explains the many properties of metal including their shine, and their ability to conduct electricity and heat. We are then introduced to the different types of geometric arrangements including body-centered cubic, face-centered cubic and hexagonal close-packing. With the assistance of animated graphics, join us as we bring metallic bonding to life.
